Born Free

I was shown the video today for M.I.A's Born Free. Apparently it has been getting a lot of press since its release, but living in a world where the news hardly reaches me i was quite unaware.
As i began watching it i had no idea what i was about to see, i had been told 'go on vimeo, search for this, watch it, its really controversial' or words to that effect, and at first i thought it was simply because of the violent behavior of the police.
Oh how wrong i was. Im sure many people will laugh at the film, i however did not. Ok i could see the funny side of it, but it was just too gruesomely detailed and real. (theres a southpark episode that is about the same thing, which i found extremely funny, so its not like i cant laugh at the issue, just not like this)
Obviously the film is talking about how different minority groups get condemned and treated, but i think because it is a 'minority group' that i belong to that it effected me so much. That and the fact im not feeling too brilliant today anyway!!

Overall though i think it is an amazing film, i was just shocked by its contents to begin with!! Anyway, if you havent seen it please do...

And at the end of the day, its only the boys they're taking, so a) im pretty safe, and b) every ginger boy ive ever met has been strange, so maybe they're onto something!

The End is in Sight...

Several things have happened.
First of all i will show you the final film i created for my crit...

And there you have it. 24 different seconds of cameraless film. Overall i think my crit went well, ive got a few things to research and modify before the presentation in a week and a half, but overall i am happy with how it all went!

However, this film marks the end of my experimentation with 35mm film. I simply can no longer take the horrible process of scanning/resizing/cropping/saving/compiling/saving/editing all to get a single second of film. So i am saying goodbye to the 35mm and moving onwards to 16mm film. I have just purchased a 16mm projector (an Elf RT 1), a splicer, 2 spools, and hopefully soon some actual film!!

So i will be continuing my cameraless film work with this!! In the hope that it will all be quicker, more authentic, and overall just better!!

In other news im spending an hour every day this week helping with an exhibition in Bournemouth's Lower Gardens, so basically im going to spend an hour every day sitting in the sun and telling people not to touch the super heroes. Sounds fab to me!!

And now im going to go play with my projector a bit more, and see if i can work out how to actually thread the film on to it!!
